I just looked through “15 simple things Californians can Do To Recycle ” by the Earth Works Group. Here are a dozen ways to recycle.
1. Find out how much a community pays for their police department versus their waste management recycling.
2. Check buildings you visit to see if there are seated recycling waste bins or blue white paper collection buckets for office buildings.
3. Consume local recycled materials vendors
Find the places near you that sell recycled materials and postconsumer waste partial ingredient products.
4. Recycle Computer Components and cellphones
Go to Best Buy or Radio Shack for turning in used equipment like computers, laptops, cellphones, and electric equipment.
4. Take Down Unnecessary Power Outlets
Routing extra power and extending wiring unecessarily enlarges drags on power usage. Outside or garage outlets should be powered down or plugged to prevent fire or accdiental use problems.
5. Stop Junk Mail
Get off those mailing lists and convert what you do need to email. Make sure you can unsubscribe and urge neighbors to do the same. Your mailman will thank you.
6. Install a graywater/freshwater tank.
One of these days some manufacturer is going to start issuing these free with a federal subsidy. Until then, Californians know a hot hot summer is coming. Saving water at any time is good. Recycling water leaves plants able to fill needs and develop emergency response resources faster.
7. Carpool/Telecommute
Gas and car costs rise with every trip. Now is the time to get the boss on board with carpooling or telecommuting. Make sure office coverage is flexible enough for everybody to arrive safely. Remember, if the meeting happens in the car everybody can leave a half hour early and be home immediately after.
8. Actively Look for PostConsumer Products
Let manufacturers and retailers know that recycled and postconsumer product goods get your dollar.
9. Have a garage/Freecycle Sale
Time to get the attic basement and garage cleaned out. Get the word out everything not sold by 2 p.m. is free! You’ll have room for projects and the goodwill of your neighbors. Try collecting something as money if you can’t afford to give stuff away. One 2-litre bottle you can recycle works.
10. Bring Your Own Coffee Cup
Look at all those Starbucks receipts. How many paper or plastic disposed coffee cups are you personally responsible for? At work or out and around town, bring your own mug for coffee.
11. Don’t toss those clothes!
Old clothes don’t have to hit the trash can. Re-use zippers and buttons and save old sheets and towels for cleaning.
12. Save Old Sheets
Curtains for Camping, cleaning rags, emergency roof leak tap/shelter, paint covers for furniture, packing or wrapping fragile items away.
