The recycling urge can strike anywhere, anytime. The feel-good payback of recycling removes the depression one feels when reviewing polluted air or smoggy freeways. Every little bit counts, and nobody knows what one thing to renew and sustain our planet will tip the balance. But some preparation can smooth over your sudden urge to continue the sustainability practices for a renewable planet others have started.
1. Compost Thyself
Get a mini trashcan, small metal container, close sealed plastic bin, or other likely suspect. Trash vegetable bits, fruit seeds, and anything that could “slop the hogs”. These bits may be too rough or sour or bitter or sharp for your palate, but Mother Nature loves fresh vegetables. Composting should have a timeframe and a goal. Make sure your garden is ready for what’s going to be spooned from the mini compost bin.
2. Pass It On
Even if you don’t have the garden of the green expert’s dreams, one or more of your neighbors might appreciate the fresh coffee grounds form your morning steamer. Recycling coffee grounds is an excellent and biodegradeable way to discard coffee grounds and fertilize ammonia free plants the same time. Find someone on your block who needs the grounds and develop a system for you to leave them bagged on the fence or tucked inside their garden gate.
3. Bag It
Every household these days should have one satchel or carry bag like a shopping tote or canvas carryall. Eliminate the need for disposable (to where?) bags by re-using the shopping bag for groceries, purchases, anything that would normally waste a paper bag or bring another plastic bag into landfill existence. These lightweight bags should serve as all-purpose bags so you can say “no thanks” when a clerk ties to waste another bag wrapping your stuff.
4. Scout the Recycling Centers
Make sure you know where all the recycling centers nearest to you are. Those stacked up bottles of pop and cans can be re-used when it comes time to go to the grocery store. More up to date recycling centers will have computerized vouchers to use at the grocery store cash register for credit. This saves garbage trucks an extra trip due to the volume of cans and plastic bottles alone. Route your work commute one day a week by this recycling center.
5. Bridge the Gaps
Are you a tweener? Are one of Generation X, Y, or Z? Make recycling fun by getting together with kids, seniors, any group which can organize some much needed support to local roadways and lanes. Picking up trash, sorting highway refuse and trash bin waste for recycling can supply much needed revenue streams for pilot green projects and sustainable living education programs. Get together with some friends and save some highways.
