The Du Pont Green (Goo) Business Model

What goes into a green business model? As more and more businesses and industries try to cap some marketability out of the trend toward sustainability, the question forms itself around the end product and the manufacturing process surrounding any product. Think about that next time you buy something marked “Du Pont”.

If the product is in fact a service, what types of industry and action can they offset with carbon credits? What qualities render that service a green service or eco-friendly corporation? The green goo dumped out of the smelter in West Virginia by the Du Pont corporation has caused record cancer in the community, yet its lawyers brazenly storm the courthouse looking for a loophole.

Does a green business qualify as green because its end product is to promote sustainability, or because in the practice of any single business driver, all processes leading to a successful production of that end product or service are as sustainable as possible?

Green friendly consumers should start asking themselves how much of today’s industrialized pollutants are still necessary to be dumped into the environment. I say this because a news report came to my attention that caused me to rethink living in an industrially irresponsible age.

How can a company still do business in the United States after mistakenly allowing a concrete drain to exude green toxic matter? Can’t they afford the really good scientists? Why when federal and private consultant scientists are tasked to walk over lands with toxic sludge infilling the water can’t they detect it?

“a 41-year-old homemaker and mother of three, who took it upon herself to patrol the site after she and nine other plaintiffs won a class-action lawsuit against DuPont in 2007 over long-term exposure to toxins from the site.

When I saw that, I knew there was something wrong,” she said.

Morlock, one of thousands who may eventually share in $380 million in damage awards, did not believe DuPont’s claims during the trial that Spelter was clean and ready for redevelopment.”

Aren’t you glad you don’t live in Delaware?

Maybe Du Pont’s new slogan should be : Du Pont: Your Stimulus Cleanup Dollars at Work.

Certain metals at the DuPont site, including arsenic, cadmium and lead, can in high concentrations cause serious health problems ranging from developmental disabilities and cancers to low fertility. The site is fenced and inaccessible to the public, making runoff the only potential threat.
