Summer is upon us and nothing is more fun than getting a big box and having some fun! The recycling movement is always urging re-use, so why not ask your neighborhood grocery store about those big huge boxes they disassemble and throw away every night when the stock people finish putting the new grocery shipment away?
How many ways can you have fun with a big box? One thing is for sure, disassembling it for the trash is a no-no. Why contribute to landfill mass when your kids can have a blast? Ask your store manager for details about grabbing the boxes folded up after use. Make sure they are dry stock boxes, not meat or produce boxes.

Collect decoration bits of wrapping paper, old magazines, and ribbons and tape and bows, tacks and other bits for big box fun day at your house. 1. Fort
Keep the big box constructed and match same size boxes until you have a connecting “castle”. Lots of boxes means you can have a tunnel. Match up end points and tape or glue end flaps together or on top of the next fort “section”. Two story forts need a strong box underneath or can be set up next to a wall.
2. Giant Dragon
Decorate the box using bits of ribbon, cut circles, squiggly paper cut and folded back to form a ruffle or mane, paper cones and cylinders, cut spirals, and other things painted from around the house nobody is using. paint or sketch in eyes and use red crepe paper or paint to make “fire’. If you have a big enough box you can cut armholes and scamper around with long streamers.
5. Diorama
Cut out or paint a picture of some amazing thing you found online, like an Indian train station, a British Empire coronation, or a “Star Wars” or ‘Lord of the Rings” movie scene.
