Green Birthday Party
I read a couple of articles online about throwing a green birthday party. But as I read through them, I saw a greener light at the end of the tunnel. One suggested paperless invitations and gently used toys, which I thought would take the power of Julius Caesar or more to get kids excited about.
I agree in theory with the philosophy of greenness in celebration, but I would tack on something to the organic cupcakes and the used toys. I would urge the activities from this fun post concerning recycling crafts and making toys and gear up for a day of serious green fun. The box recycling posts in a three part series of Box recycling make a total recipe for green and eco-friendly party fun.
I would add to a green birthday party a scavenger hunt with a solar powered thingy as a prize, or get the kids to recycle collect plastic bottles and cans to their hearts content, then spritz them down and use the money at the recycling center to treate everybody to enjoy…whatever they want. The blog at naturemoms.com suggest adopting an African goat. Can’t you just see the t-shirts?
On the topic of dining for the sustainable birthday party: The one article says use real plates and utensils, the other says use disposable by all means.
A fantastic article on a green birthday party is found at a site I am new to, naturemoms.com. Seeded invitations (with actual seeds in them) sound great. Even the people who can’t come win something.
I would say use real plates and silverware and cups, and show kids how to use green detergent to wash in an eco-friendly manner. Every kid washes their own stuff. This way there is a memory there of foundational eco-friendly and sustainable values to tap in the future.

I got an email today from an entity titled greenzone, paperless advertising for a greener earth. This sounds good already. Any advertising I might read should be lessened by the burden of adding landfill mass or wasting trees for my perusal.
