When was the last time you went to the Freecycle pages when you needed something? When was the last time to decided to see if something that was broken could be repaired with a little trouble and research instead of pitching it and buying something new? Do you have publications you reference regarding sustainable consumables?

Do you scan the available items in the range you are looking in to see which have been prepared and packaged and manufactured sustainably? Do you know what chemicals and inclusions of additives require additional chemical treatment and processing that leads to industrrial pollution and excess waste?

Shopping Green means shopping local. Finding fresh or new local foods and services is the sustainable shopping. Shopping Green means sourcing project materials from handoffs instead of new forest diminishing lumber. How many websites do you have in your favorites folder with green materials and sustainable living products?

Shopping green means looking for items that will last longer and require less harmful processes like laundering, dry cleaning, and mechanized repair/fossil fuel consumption. Living green means working within simple rules for low consumption and low waste daily living. Shopping should work congruent to these goals.

Scan your grocery basket before checkout and see if there are a few more green solutions to the shopping list. Review the household cleaning challenges and make sure Borax, baking soda, lemons, and other green cleaners are building their sustainable legacy at your house.

Living green means not just turning out lights but buying and installing low energy elements of the home as part of the design, or re-design. Shop for things that will make the home more efficient and look for re-use opportunities wherever possible. Keep track of recycling potential when buying consumer items like food or drinks instead of “dead end” landfill fodder

Harmful chemicals inside products for the household can make a horrible mess inside drains and sewers, requiring endless amounts of expensive wastewater treatment and processing.

Research more green friendly products for any household use that on the surface seem necessary. It’s likely there is a green friendly and ecologically beneficial way to get the job done for less money and potentially organically as well.
