Most of us didn’t grow up in sustainable households. Rather, we grew up in homes where consumerism was the norm. But eco-friendly living and information puts a defining barrier against filling landfills with more excess unnecessary packaging, refuse, and reclaimable materials. The biggest daily requirements of our normal routines can be dressed in more environmental hues. The challenge for green friendly sustainable living is to examine consumerism and daily materials use for conversion opportunities to more sustainable habits.
Transportation is a specialized consumer joy that many car owners take pride in. the big engine, powerful car, and sleek chassis reflect pride in conspicuous consumption. But Hybrid cars are now popular enough to tax manufacturers. Hybrid cars now generate waiting lists because car drivers are so very conscious of their environment and are trying to diffuse a lifetime of exhaust emissions with one green hybrid car choice. Hybrid cars are becoming widely adopted enough to find dealers or mechanics easier. Hybrids can gather solar energy during the day while their owners are at work and speed home “for free!”.
Transportation travel also merits diminishment. Can you consolidate shopping? How many trips to the store a week do you need? Can you walk your errands or bundle them in one efficient citywide ellipse? Organize your car trips in an efficient and fossil fuel preserving way. Order products via the Internet and save one car trip a week. Use EBay and other delivery services for things that can’t be sent via mail. Mail trucks run anyway, your marginal additional deliveries on a truck already making the rounds will save your car an entire unnecessary trip (or two).
Garden and lawncare seems a green friendly natural choice, but rolling green lawns not native to your climate or natural landscape can drain water and nutrients from mature existing vegetation. Find a way to groom more sustainable habits in landscaping design and garden maintenance. Pesticide usage in lawns and gardens to maintain unnaturally showy yards can be toned down. Gray water can be used to irrigate strictly visual plant vegetation.
Lowering overall trash output is the challenge that tests the commitment of every green friendly household. Buying more fresh vegetables and less packaged meat and mass produced canned and processed foods allows for locavores (locally produced consumer diners/eaters) to lead more sustainable menu and food preparation cycles. Dining at your favorite green friendly or vegetarian restaurant also sends a message that consumerism follows its own best interest.
