Recycled cats are a good thing. Cat shelters and kitten fairs offer great cats ready for adoption. Recycled cats are green because they use up the “unwanted” cats lining shelter shelves and encourage us to re-use the natural reproduction cycle of pets for our enjoyment and comfort. cats are necessary for mice and insects, but the modern household may not “need” a cat.
What does sustainability have against cats? The consumption of resources excessively and also the manufacturing processes of cat food and cat litter in terms of packaging and mechanical. Cats are lovely and expressive animals yet their products have a decidedly non-green cast.
Cats are also known to procreate actively without provenance of human hosts to care for them. Abandoned former kittens grown to adulthood are a very common tale. Responsible husbandry of animals that serve as pets is a two way street.
Cats are wonderful to enjoy but cannot self sustain each other without help. In the modern world they can’t devise shelter or escape natural predators. Sadly, many of the natural predators of the common housecat have been replaced by pranking and abusing people who mistreat animals.
Shelters see a lot of the aftermath of these kinds of abuses. In such cases, these animals can be very hard to place in adoption scenarios. Neutering and spaying keeps populations at near manageable minimums.
The kitten fair I attended had about eight tables of two cages each. The goal was to pair animals with responsible and loving new owners.
Each cage had a black kitten with a purple bow, or a black and white kitten. The tables were colored lavender and this was a dramatic marketing match with the lavender and purple ribbons. Many of the cats had signs with their name on them, some of the names were kind of funny. The Burbank Animal Shelter had attendants taking the animals out of the cages, and plates of black and white Oreo cookies one ach table repeated the motif.
I learned that black animals (and black cats) are the hardest to get adopted. Community programs like this play up the example of environmental reponsibility.
