Recycled Halloween Costumes

Reduce & Re-Use. The best Halloween costume is a recycled one. Making a Halloween costume out of any recycled material is better than generating consumption of one more acetate creation meant to be thrown away. The statistics on the waste Halloween alone creates are frightening.

1. Police Officer

Go to any thrift shop or Salvatian Army store and find a uniform of a security guard or police officer. Cut down to size. Pin on police patches or metallic toy badges.

2. Team Uniforms

Any kind of regular man’s or teenager’s size team sport uniform can be shrunk to fit a smaller child or youth. Name letters can be sewn over or unstuck with a seam ripper.

3. Cheerleader

Find discarded practice uniforms or cut down jerseys and skirts to match team colored of a desired school or alma mater. Use generic shirts of socks and matching tone shoes. Re-use boots with covered decorations with felt in “team” colors.

4. Ghost

Ghost costumes don’t get much easier. Wrap sheets lengthwise, with a head cross shoulders section hung on the bias for draping. A black net or mesh bag sleeve over head can make the “eye holes” look spooky without obliterating vision.

5. Harry Potter

Line a black graduation gown with mauve or purple satin or polyester. A choir robe or judge robe works too. Some are listed on Ebay as low as 99 cents. Put rimmed eyeglasses on. Potter it is! A broomstick wouldn’t hurt.
