Recycling Training

Recycling as an activity can raise money and contribute to a lessened carbon footprint. Incidences that need correcting do crop up, and when they do it is appropriate to step up the communication about green living. The freedom to discard trash is crossed with anti-litter and refuse disposal laws.

Not everyone feels bound to observe good recycling standards. But when you see some occurrrences that violate these common standards, speak up. But today simply reinforcing the message can be an effective effort towards more sustainable living.

With a growing education about what trash removal and waste practices are sustainable and which are not, the practices of dumping and unsightly abandonment of trash becomes offensive. We all have roughly the same size brain and processing power, yet sometimes consumers give in to the urge to be lazy where their household waste practices are concerned.

If your house is out of sortable plastics and your eco-friendly energies are at maximum, consider spreading the message about recycling to those who are still in need of hearing the message. On flourescent green paper, print in large block letters “Please Recycle”. Cut the green paper into index cards if that works better.

Armed with tape, patrol the alleys and lots near you. Tape the signs where passersby and drivers can see the items. Today, on my morning walk, I saw a big screen TV on a stand put out in an alleyway. Perfect condition, a flat panel big screen, the size of a barn door, sitting abandoned. This could have been taken to Best Buy for their recycling credit program.

The recycling centers accessible in the grocery store lots are still unknown to many mainstream consumers. They may see the trailers and recycling awnings and visored setups in the parking but simply not connect this to the storing redeeming activity they might undertake. For cash. Who doesn’t like extra cash?

Maybe some home owners need reminding that others are watching. An environmental impact takes places when leaders in a community step up to let the individuals know what is expected. Whereas twenty years ago abandoning appliances curbside might have been allowable, today’s community recycling standards are different.

This appliance should have been Freecycled. But Freecycle is also for items wanted. If there is something you need, post the item wanted on the Freecycle for your area. If you are traveling to a larger metro area, advertise the availability in the Freecycle pages and bring some oddball stuff. Freecycle allows for trasnmission and publicity for available stuff that would otherwise be left curbside.

And then there are those looking out for the recycling way of life. This construction site had a barrel (shown in the photo above) sorted for recycling. This was an intelligent approach to saving materials from a remodel of a credit union. Clearly the barrel was a good amount for use in some kind iof landscape or construction project. Instead of being dumped willy nilly in the adjacent dumpster.

The torn up scraps of ripped up brick and concrete were obviously being saved for bolstering further laid pavement or for whomever might want them for a recycled space, inlaid walk, or terraced backyard. The barrel and the abandoned flat screen TV were 50 yards from each other in the same alley. A little communication goes a long way.
