Sustainability TODAY

8 simple things you can do to further sustainability today:

1. A Spot of Gardening
Survey your garden and look for a place to put in a temperature reducing plant, vine or trellis climbing bush. Mulch cools the soil and guard from weeds and evaporation. Make a cool space near a window so breezes in the evening can sustainably cool the house. Refresh your smart sprinkler programming and eradicate puddle creation on drain routes and sewer channels instead of planted earth.
2. Get Gritty

Worms need grit. It’s true. They need a box, drainage, filler, food, composty magic, and a quiet space to continue vermicomposting in peace.

3. Cherchez le Garage

Spring clean the garage and dispose of toxic chemicals, solvents, degreasers, and expired paint and other garden fertilizers and herbicides. Summer heat and close airless spaces like garages create toxic microclimates. Freshen up moldy stucco, discard pointless keepsakes, dump damaged or outdated stored materials, scout infestation areas, mend spoiled wood, and fix broken pipes, windows and doors.

4. Freecycle Recycle

Make a point of doing the Freecycle. Evangelize registering at freecycle.com and list something in your home you could do without but don’t quite want to throw out. Subvert your urge to buy, buy, BUY! and source some stuff form Freecycle. Visiting another city or driving an unusual route? Review the Freecycle listings for that area and see if karma is smiling your way.

5.  A Borrower and a Lender IS

Shakespeare wasn’t practicing sustainable values when he quoth “neither a borrower nor a lender be”. And how could someone who wrote “A Merchant of Venice” not know about moneylending? Shakespeare was not into reducing and re-using.  Hadn’t he ever gone next door for a goblet of sucre?

But the point here is to discourage Big Box consumer expenditures and necessary device retirement. Graveyards of blow mowers and weed wackers stuff landfills because the habit of borrowing equipment has gone South in an era of conspicuous consumerism and fetish home ownership.

6. Make a Clean Break

Make greener home detergents using baking soda and lemon rinse cleaner. The house will smell great and the chemical profile will break down dramatically. Look for ways to bring down the exit of plastic bottles and chemicals not safe to have around kids in the home. Green Friendly Tips

Lots of amazing green home cleaning solutions and non chemical disinfectant techniques are available very inexpensively. Getting resourceful around the house with organic home cleaners cuts down on allergies, too. Check Sustainability with a Recycling Scorecard

7. Get Solar

Do you have a solar device in the house? if not, why? Bring some gadget value to your life and some tenable savings via le soleil.?

8. Get Cranking

Talk about biofuel! Cranked radios, flashlights, and battery chargers can see you through a storm or absorb the nightly device charging hit to the nonsolar plexus of your electricity bill.
