Yes, astonishing as it may seem, a trucking magazine was the eye opening source of some amazing tips I found over the weekend. It seems the many garage bound mechanics and weekend grease monkeys have learned some lightning efficiencies and time saving tips. Here are just a few.
1. Use sticky tape to thread a bolt.
This tip is amazing. Instead of craning awkwardly to get a bolt threaded in a wall or cupboard knob it up with double sided tape or curled up masking tape. Once the screws are threaded in, gently rip away the tape.
2. Use a magnet to clean up metal particles/shavings
How many times have you had some kind of grit or dust that was metal and you could get the last part of it up? Or you couldn’t get the last bits from cracks and grooves? Use a magnet to clean it out! Mask a magnet inside a plastic bag, then flip the bag over and seal it and trash it.
3. Heating & Cooling Does the Job
Don’t throw out or consign to the dump an old piece of furniture or lamo because you can’t get the replacement bulbs in because the bolt or nut is wedged in, apply hot wax and cold water to “shock” the element out of place newly loosed from the effect.
4. Extend Wiper Blades
Winter and spring rains may have totaled your windshield wipers, while your budget and schedule may not permit a trip to the auto supply store. Re-use your windshield wipers a little longer with this tip. Fine sandpaper works great to restore windshield wiper blades that have a little oxidation on them. If your wipers are chattering across your windshield, a few passes might make the difference you need.
5. Don’t Get Stuck On
Every once in a while there is a sticker or decal or label we just have to get off. But using a chemical solvent will damage the material, or can’t be had, or isn’t green. Dental floss and fishing line work well for cutting through adhesives. The adhesive on labels, stickers, and long term price tags will come off easier using fishing line.
